1935-1946 by Jazz Gillum.
Jazz Gillum was one of the most reliable and expressive harmonica voices to emerge from the Chicago blues scene of the 1930s, and this collection, "1935-1946," gathers eighteen sides that trace his rise across a remarkably fertile stretch of recording. Spanning sessions cut between October 1934 and January 1937, the album captures Gillum in his most formative and prolific years, when the sound of Chicago blues was being shaped session by session in studios up and down the city.
The A-side opens with "Mobile And Western Line," a title that hints at the railroad imagery that runs so deep in this music, and moves through "Crazy About You," "I Want You By My Side," and "Jockey Blues." Tracks like "She Keeps On Rickin'," "I Went To The Gypsy," and "My Old Lizzie" show Gillum's knack for pairing everyday storytelling with the plaintive cry of his harp, while "My Old Suitcase" and "Get Away Old Woman" round out the first side with the wit and grit that defined his style.
Flip to the B-side and the momentum continues with "Stavin' Chain," "Somebody Been Talking To You," and "One Time Blues," before the rolling river spirit of "Big Katy Adams" takes hold. "Get Your Business Straight," "That's What Worries Me," and "My Big Money" keep the mood earthy and immediate, and the set closes with the deep, moody undercurrents of "Deep Water Blues" and the swaggering "Fast Woman."
Nearly all of these recordings were made in Chicago, with a single side, "Get Your Business Straight," captured in New York City on 23 August 1936. The matrix numbers and session dates tell the story of an artist constantly at work, returning to the studio again and again through 1935 and 1936, with sessions clustered in February, March, and April of 1936 that proved especially productive. It is a snapshot of a musician firmly at the center of his craft.
This pressing was produced by BoB in Austria and distributed by Wolf Records of Vienna, with the original recordings drawn from the noted collections of Werner Benecke, Joe Bussard, Johnny Parth, and Guido van Rijn. Compiled by Johnny Parth, whose deep archival work has preserved so much prewar blues, the album benefits from careful curation by one of the field's most dedicated figures. Personnel details are listed on the back cover for those who want to dig into the accompaniment behind Gillum's harp.
Remastering was handled by Hans Klement at Studio Hans Klement in Vienna, bringing these vintage sides forward for modern listening. For collectors of prewar Chicago blues and admirers of the harmonica tradition, this is an essential document of Jazz Gillum in his prime.
