A Love Supreme by John Coltrane.

Few records in the jazz canon carry the weight and devotion of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," and this Japanese pressing brings that reverence into physical form. Manufactured by Victor Musical Industries, Inc. in Tokyo and licensed through MCA Records of Universal City, California, it presents Coltrane's spiritual masterwork with the care and precision that Japanese pressings are so admired for.

Recorded on December 9th, 1964, the album unfolds as a four-part suite. Side A opens with "Part I - Acknowledgement," followed by "Part II - Resolution," while Side B carries the sweeping conclusion of "Part III - Pursuance" and "Part IV - Psalm." Every note here was composed by Coltrane himself, who also penned the liner notes, offering a rare window into the devotional intent behind the music.

The performances are anchored by the classic quartet at the height of its powers. Coltrane's tenor saxophone, played on his Selmer Mark VI, soars above McCoy Tyner's piano, Jimmy Garrison's double bass, and the ceaseless, tumbling energy of Elvin Jones on drums. Captured by the legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Bob Thiele, who also contributed the cover photography, the recording remains a benchmark for how a jazz session can be documented with clarity and feeling.

This edition is a treat for the collector's eye as well as the ear. Released in a gatefold sleeve, it arrives with a teal-coloured obi and an insert featuring Japanese liner notes. The cover design is credited to George Gray, with liner design by Joe Lebow and painting by Victor Kalin, all working in service of a package that honours the music within.

A curious detail rewards close inspection: the vinyl appears solid black at a glance, yet held beneath strong light it reveals itself as a transparent brown, a subtle mark of quality that many pressing enthusiasts prize. The catalog numbering reflects its dual heritage, with Impulse! VIM-4610 on the spine, Impulse! A-77 across the front, backside, and inside gatefold, and MCA Records VIM-4610 on the rear cover and labels.

Bearing the SJ Seal of Approval, this pressing stands as a worthy home for one of the most enduring statements in recorded jazz. For anyone drawn to the meditative fire of Coltrane's quartet, or to the artistry of Japanese record craftsmanship, it is a record that invites repeated listening and quiet contemplation in equal measure.
