There are compilations, and then there are compilations that feel like a guided tour through the very heart of a record label's golden age. This sixth volume of Atlantic's monumental "Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974" series narrows its focus to the years 1966 through 1969, a stretch when Southern soul reached its absolute peak and Atlantic sat squarely at the center of it all. Spread across four sides and twenty-eight tracks, it captures the sound of a label firing on every cylinder.
Side A alone reads like a soul revue you would pay serious money to witness. Wilson Pickett's "Land Of 1000 Dances" and "Mustang Sally" bring the swagger, Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood" delivers the tension and release, and Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness" builds from a whisper to a storm. Add Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" and Sam & Dave's "Soul Man," and you have a run of records that defined an era.
The collection leans heavily and rightly on the Queen of Soul, gathering "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)," "Respect," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Baby I Love You," "Chain Of Fools," and "Think." Together they trace Aretha Franklin's ascent in real time. Alongside them sit instrumental gems like Booker T. & the M.G.'s "Hip Hug-Her," the Bar-Kays' "Soul Finger," and King Curtis's "Memphis Soul Stew," reminders that the players were every bit as vital as the singers.
The final side carries some of the most enduring soul ballads ever committed to tape. Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" opens it, followed by Percy Sledge's "Slip Away," Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," and Brook Benton's smoky "Rainy Night In Georgia." Archie Bell & the Drells' "Tighten Up" keeps the dancers moving. It is a fitting close to a set that never lets up.
This 1985 pressing was assembled with genuine care. Compilation producers Aziz Goksel and Bob Porter shaped the sequencing, with Ahmet Ertegun serving as executive producer and contributing liner notes alongside Robert Pruter. The audio was digitally remastered from both mono and true stereo originals, with the superior take chosen in every instance; Elliott Federman handled the digital mastering and cut the lacquer, while Bobby Warner and Jimmy Douglass managed the digital transfers.
Housed in a gatefold sleeve with cover artwork by Fred Otnes and art direction from Bob Defrin, the package carries catalog number 81298-1-F, manufactured by Atlantic Recording Corporation and pressed by RCA Music Service under license.
