Bitches Brew Live by Miles Davis.

Few records in the jazz canon carry the electric charge of "Bitches Brew Live" by Miles Davis, a collection that captures the trumpeter at his most fearless, stepping onto festival stages to unleash a sound that would rewrite the boundaries of the music. This release gathers two landmark live moments, presenting Miles in full flight as he pushed his ensemble deep into uncharted territory.

The A-side opens with three tracks recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, on July 5, 1969. Here you get "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down," the smoldering ballad "Sanctuary," and the medley of "It's About That Time" flowing into "The Theme." These performances document the fertile period around the birth of Davis's electric vision, delivered before a festival crowd with all the immediacy that only a live setting can provide.

From there the record travels to England, with the remaining tracks captured live at the Isle of Wight on August 29, 1970. This stretch runs from "Directions" and "Bitches Brew" through a second reading of "It's About That Time" and "Sanctuary," on to the propulsive "Spanish Key," and closing with "The Theme." Hearing these titles revisited across two different nights offers a fascinating window into how Davis and his players reshaped the material night to night, treating each piece as a living, shifting organism rather than a fixed composition.

A note for the completists: the release credits carry a small crediting mistake worth knowing. "Directions" is in fact the work of Joe Zawinul, while "Bitches Brew" is the composition of Miles Davis himself. It is the kind of detail that collectors relish, a quirk of the pressing that adds to the story of the object in your hands.

As a physical artifact, this edition is built for listeners who care about the presentation as much as the performances. It is a 180 gram audiophile pressing, mastered at Battery Studios in New York City, and it includes a 12-page full colour booklet to accompany the music. The set also features an etched D-side, a handsome touch that turns the final surface into a visual keepsake.

The pressing arrives under the compilation carried out in 2011 by Sony Music Entertainment, manufactured and distributed by Music On Vinyl B.V. The Newport material was originally recorded in 1969 and released in 2011, while the Isle of Wight recordings were originally captured in 1970 and released in 2009, bringing two historic engagements together in a single, thoughtfully assembled package that belongs in any serious collection of electric-era Miles.
