Blue World by John Coltrane.

In 1964, John Coltrane walked into Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and cut a session that would sit unheard for more than half a century. "Blue World," released in 2019 by Impulse! Records and Universal Music Enterprises, finally brings that lost afternoon into the light. Every track here was previously unreleased, drawn from the original quarter inch analog mono tapes recorded on June 24, 1964.

The story behind these recordings is unusually cinematic. Three of the performances, "Naima (Take 1)," "Village Blues (Take 2)," and the title piece "Blue World," were used in the soundtrack of the 1964 Canadian film "Le Chat Dans Le Sac." Archival research for the National Film Board, carried out by Frédéric Savard, helped return this music to Coltrane's own discography, where it belongs.

The quartet assembled here is the classic one: John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Together they revisit familiar Coltrane territory with fresh urgency, working through multiple takes that reveal the group thinking in real time. You get "Village Blues" three ways across the sides, plus a second reading of "Naima," offering a rare window into how these musicians shaped a piece from take to take.

Alongside those explorations sit "Like Sonny" and "Traneing In," rounding out a program that moves from the tender balladry of "Naima" to the loose, rolling blues that gives the record its heart. All compositions are by John Coltrane, published through Jowcol Music, and the original recordings were produced by Coltrane himself, with Ken Druker serving as reissue producer and Ravi Coltrane and Harry Weinger as executive producers.

The audio pedigree is exacting throughout. Rudy Van Gelder recorded, mixed, and mastered the original session, and the reissue was remastered by Kevin Reeves at Universal Music Mastering in New York. Lacquers were cut by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios, with runouts etched by hand. Ashley Kahn contributes liner notes that set the session in context, while photography by Jim Marshall and Chuck Stewart, design by Julian House and @Intro of London, and creative direction from Josh Cheuse give the package its handsome, considered presentation.

For collectors, "Blue World" is more than a footnote; it is a genuine addition to the Coltrane canon, a document of the quartet at the height of its powers captured in mono and issued with the care such a discovery deserves. Few records offer the chance to hear one of jazz's defining ensembles as if the tape were still warm.
