When clarinet virtuoso Buddy DeFranco steps in front of a full big band, you know the results are going to swing hard, and "Born To Swing!" delivers exactly that. Recorded with the explosive Al Raymond All Star Big Jazz Band, this is a big, brassy showcase built for anyone who loves the sound of a large ensemble digging into classic material with real muscle and finesse.
The program opens strong with "Don't Be That Way," easing into the lush ballad reading of "Tenderly," then rolling through "Mr. Lucky" and the cheeky "Buy It And Fry It" to round out the first side. Flip to side two and you get the hard-charging "Skyliner," the moody "Melancholy Stockholm," a heartfelt "I Wanna Be Loved," and a closing take on the Kern standard "Yesterdays." It is a balanced set that moves between swaggering up tempo numbers and tender, after hours ballads.
Al Raymond leads and conducts a genuine all star lineup, and the horn section is stacked deep. The reeds feature Wendell Hobbs on lead alto, Larry McKenna on alto and tenor, Joe Sudler anchoring on baritone, and tenor work from Denis DiBlasio and John Simon. The brass is equally formidable, with a trumpet and flugelhorn team of Dave Cooper, Donald Downs, Lyn Biviano, and Tony DeSantis, plus a rich trombone choir of Brian Pastor, Joe Zeigenfuss, Jose Vidal on bass trombone, and the legendary Al Grey, whose presence is prominent enough to earn a special credit on the front cover.
The rhythm section keeps everything grounded and grooving, with Pete Jackson on piano, Tom Fiori on bass, and Tony Vigilante on drums holding the whole machine together. For a little extra flavor, Denis DiBlasio and George Rabbai add scat vocals, giving certain moments a playful, swinging vocal lift that plays off the ensemble's big horn statements.
Sonically, this record was well cared for behind the boards. Terry Hoffman handled engineering duties, the mix was done at Acoustical Concepts Inc, and it was mastered by Nimitr Sarikananda using computerized disc mastering at Masterwork Recording in Philadelphia. John Vanore served as technical advisor, and Al Raymond took on both leader and producer roles, keeping a consistent vision across the whole session.
Collectors will appreciate the quirky naming variations that make this pressing fun to chase. The spine, front cover, rear cover, and center label each credit the band slightly differently, and the label print even carries the double L spelling that has long intrigued fans. It all adds to the character of a big band date that lives up to its exclamation point.
