Recorded in 1960 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, "Boss Tenor" stands as one of Gene Ammons' defining statements, a session that captured the big-toned Chicago tenor man at the height of his expressive powers. The album carries the added distinction of liner notes by LeRoi Jones—later Amiri Baraka—one of the most important literary voices to write about the music of his era. This 2023 Analogue Productions pressing revives that legacy for a new generation, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes and cut with the care that has made the Prestige Series so respected.
Ammons leads with the warm, muscular tenor that earned him the "Boss" nickname, and he's supported by a remarkable rhythm section. Tommy Flanagan's elegant, swinging piano provides melodic depth, while Doug Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on drums lay down an unerring pulse. Comes with a 'Quality Record Pressings' rice paper inner sleeve. Inserts may include an 'Acoustic Sounds' catalog and 'Prestige' stereo and mono sets. On the front of the plastic outer bag may be stickers for '100% analog masters' and 'The Analogue Productions Guarantee', while on the back is a sticker with the barcode and Analogue Productions catalog number.
