Brand New Life by Brandee Younger.
Few contemporary artists have done more to place the harp at the center of jazz conversation than Brandee Younger, and "Brand New Life" stands as a vivid document of that mission. This is a record that treats the harp not as an ornament or a novelty, but as a lead voice capable of swing, soul, and deep emotional weight. From the opening bars, the album invites you to hear the instrument in a new context, at once rooted in tradition and reaching for something fresh.
The A-side unfolds with a sense of purpose and warmth, opening on "You're A Girl For One Man Only" before moving into the title track, "Brand New Life," a piece that gives the album its name and its guiding spirit. The brief "Come Live With Me (Interlude)" acts as a graceful connective tissue, leading into "Livin' And Lovin' In My Own Way," a declaration of independence and self possession that closes the first side on a confident note.
Turn the record over and the mood shifts into something more cinematic and layered. "Running Game (Intro)" sets the stage before the full "Running Game" arrives, and the sequence carries real momentum. "Moving Target" and "Dust" keep the second side rich and varied, each track offering a different facet of Younger's compositional and interpretive range.
The B-side also reveals Younger's gift for reimagining beloved material. "The Windmills Of Your Mind," a song with a long and storied life across many genres, becomes a showcase for the harp's shimmering possibilities, its cascading lines perfectly suited to the tune's circular, dreamlike shape. Following it, "If It's Magic" closes the album on a note of tenderness, a fitting resolution to a program that balances introspection with celebration.
What makes "Brand New Life" so rewarding on vinyl is the way the format honors the instrument's natural resonance. The harp's overtones, the decay of each plucked string, the interplay of texture and space, all of it benefits from the warmth and depth that a physical pressing delivers. This is music meant to fill a room and reward close, unhurried listening.
For collectors and listeners drawn to the modern edge of jazz, this album belongs on the shelf beside the artists who have pushed the music forward while keeping soul at its core. "Brand New Life" is a statement of identity from an artist reshaping what the harp can do, and it plays as beautifully as a whole as it does track by track. Drop the needle and let it carry you.
