Bring It Home To Me by Blue Mitchell.
Blue Mitchell steps into Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on January 6, 1966, and lays down a session that would land in the Blue Note catalog the following year. Originally released in 1967, "Bring It Home To Me" captures the trumpeter at a moment when hard bop was stretching and breathing, absorbing soul and blues without ever losing its swing. This is the kind of Blue Note date that rewards close listening and repeated spins.
The program opens with the title track, a warm and inviting statement that sets the tone for everything that follows. From there the album moves through "Blues 3 For 1" and the greasy, rolling groove of "Port Rico Rock," a side one that balances the tender against the hard-driving. It is music built for a room, played by musicians who understood how to make a melody feel lived in.
Side two carries its own kind of momentum, beginning with "Ginger Bread Boy," a tune that has become something of a jazz standard in the decades since. The mood shifts for "Portrait Of Jennie," a ballad that lets Mitchell's tone stretch out and sing, before "Blue's Theme" brings the record to a close. Together the six tracks show off the range that made Mitchell such a dependable and expressive leader.
This edition arrives as part of the celebrated Blue Note Tone Poet Series, the audiophile reissue program that treats these classic sessions with the care they deserve. The music has been cut directly from the original analog tapes, preserving the sound that Rudy Van Gelder committed to tape in 1966. Kevin Gray handled the mastering at Cohearent Audio, working from those original tapes to bring out every detail of the session.
The reissue was supervised by Joe Harley, the driving force behind the Tone Poet Series, and manufactured at Record Technology Inc. on 180 gram vinyl. The runouts are etched, and the whole package reflects the standard of quality that collectors have come to expect from these releases. It is a faithful and generous presentation of a record that has long deserved this level of attention.
Released on Blue Note Records, with this 2022 pressing distributed by Universal Music Enterprises, "Bring It Home To Me" is a rewarding addition to any collection built on the classic Blue Note sound. For anyone drawn to the trumpet, to hard bop with a soulful edge, or to the Van Gelder recording legacy, this is Blue Mitchell at his most engaging, pressed and presented for serious listening.
