Carolina Confessions by The Marcus King Band.
There is a particular kind of thrill that comes from dropping the needle on "Carolina Confessions," the album that finds The Marcus King Band stretching into deep, soulful territory across ten tracks of confession, longing, and homeward pull. From the opening title cut through the closing ache of "Goodbye Carolina," this is a record that wears its heart on its sleeve, anchored by Marcus King himself on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, and lead vocals.
King wrote the bulk of this material, and his songwriting voice runs through cuts like "Where I'm Headed," "Homesick," and "Welcome 'Round Here." The lone outside contribution comes on "How Long," co-written by King with Dan Auerbach and Pat McLaughlin, a pedigree that speaks to the caliber of company King was keeping in the studio. These are songs built for a full band to lean into, and the group does exactly that.
The ensemble is a rich one. Stephen Campbell holds down the bass while Jack Ryan drives the rhythm on drums and percussion, and DeShawn Alexander colors the arrangements with keyboards and organ. The horn section gives the album its size and swagger: Dean Mitchell on tenor and baritone saxophone, flute, and horn arrangements, alongside Justin Johnson on trumpet, trombone, tambourine, and additional horn arrangements. Together they lift songs like "Side Door" and "Autumn Rains" into something bigger than a guitar-and-vocal record.
Behind the boards sits Dave Cobb, who produced the album and shares mixing duties, bringing his warm, analog sensibility to the proceedings. Recording and mixing were handled across sessions by Eddie Spear and Matt Ross-Spang, with assistant engineering from Gena Johnson and Chris Taylor. Paul Blakemore mastered the record, and Clint Holley cut the lacquer, the kind of careful sonic stewardship that rewards a good turntable and a quiet room.
As an object, this pressing is a pleasure to hold. It arrives in a gatefold jacket dressed with cover art and design by Florian Mihr and photography by David McClister, imagery that suits the moody, Southern character of the music inside. The jacket carries the printed catalog number FAN00296, with a barcode sticker (FAN00352, marked INDIE and SANGRIA) applied over the printed barcode, and it was made in the USA.
For fans of soul-steeped, blues-informed rock with a serious horn section and a frontman who can sing and play in equal measure, "Carolina Confessions" is a standout entry in the Marcus King catalog. It is a record about leaving and coming back, and it plays beautifully from first groove to last.
