Coltrane by The John Coltrane Quartet.
Recorded across two sessions in the spring of 1962, "Coltrane" captures the classic John Coltrane Quartet at a moment of extraordinary cohesion. This is the group that would come to define one of the most fertile periods in modern jazz: John Coltrane on tenor and soprano saxophone, McCoy Tyner at the piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Together they moved with a rare, telepathic ease, pushing and pulling at the edges of each piece while never losing the pulse at its center.
The album opens with "Out Of This World," a sweeping, hypnotic performance that lets the quartet stretch out and build tension patiently over Jones's rolling, insistent drumming. From there, "Soul Eyes" offers a change of temperament, a warm and lyrical ballad that showcases the tenderness Coltrane could bring to a melody, with Tyner's chords glowing beneath him.
The second side broadens the emotional range further. "The Inch Worm" turns a deceptively simple, almost nursery-like theme into something searching and spacious, while "Tunji" settles into a deep, meditative groove. The set closes with "Miles' Mode," a bracing and angular workout that gives the whole band room to converse, trade, and drive toward a charged finish.
Behind the glass sat Rudy Van Gelder, the legendary engineer whose Englewood Cliffs studio became synonymous with the sound of Impulse and Blue Note alike. His work here gives the record its unmistakable clarity and warmth, each instrument placed with care and presence. Bob Thiele produced the sessions and contributed the liner notes, while the striking cover photography came from Pete Turner and the liner photos from Burt Goldblatt. Robert Flynn handled the cover design and Joe Lebow the liner design.
This particular edition is a Japanese pressing, manufactured in Japan by Nippon Columbia Co., Ltd. under the Impulse imprint, a product of ABC-Paramount Records, Inc. It carries Japanese liner notes and was issued in a limited edition of 20,000 copies, with the original ¥1,800 price still noted on the cover.
For collectors drawn to the classic quartet and to the meticulous craft of these Impulse sessions, "Coltrane" remains an essential document. It is music of great intensity and great intimacy, delivered by four musicians at the height of their shared understanding, and preserved here in a handsome Japanese pressing worthy of the recordings within.
