Compassion by Vijay Iyer.
Vijay Iyer's "Compassion" arrives as a 2-LP set on ECM, carrying the catalog number ECM 2760 and pressed for release in 2024. This is an ECM Production in the fullest sense, produced by Iyer alongside label founder Manfred Eicher, a pairing that speaks to the care and considered patience behind the music captured here. Spread across four sides, the album gives its dozen pieces room to breathe, unfolding at the unhurried pace that vinyl rewards.
The recording itself took shape in May 2022 at Oktaven Audio in Mount Vernon, New York, with Ryan Streber behind the console as engineer. The mixing followed across July and August of that year, a process that lends the set its depth and clarity. Everything about the physical release reflects ECM's long tradition of visual and sonic craftsmanship, from the cover photograph by Jan Kricke to the liner image by Ogata, all pulled together under the design hand of Sascha Kleis.
The program moves through Iyer's own compositions and a thoughtfully chosen set of pieces by others. Side A opens with the title track "Compassion," then "Arch," before turning to Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed," a tune published through Jobete Music and Black Bull Music. Side B gathers "Maelstrom," the meditative "Prelude: Orison," and "Tempest," a sequence that swings between turbulence and stillness.
Side C brings some of the album's most striking cross-generational conversations. "Panegyric" gives way to "Nonaah," a piece by Roscoe Mitchell drawn from the Art Ensemble of Chicago's publishing catalog, before "Where I Am" closes the side. Here Iyer places his own voice in dialogue with figures whose work has shaped the wider language of creative music, a gesture that runs quietly through the entire record.
The final side carries "Ghostrumental" and "It Goes," and closes with "Free Spirits / Drummer's Song," a paired conclusion that ties the set's threads together. Across these sides, the publishing credits alone tell a story of lineage, with pieces connected to John Stubblefield through Norahs Publishing and SteepleChase Music, and to the late Geri Allen through Antoinette Music and Pacific Wind Music. Iyer's own writing is published under Sonocentric Publishing.
Manufactured in the EU and released under ECM Records GmbH of München, "Compassion" is a document worthy of a place in any serious collection of contemporary jazz on vinyl. It rewards attentive listening and repeated returns, its balance of original composition and interpretation revealing new detail with each spin. For those who prize the ECM aesthetic in both sound and presentation, this double LP stands as a considered and generous addition.
