Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet by The Miles Davis Quintet.

Captured in a single marathon session on October 26, 1956, this album belongs to the legendary run of dates the Miles Davis Quintet cut for Prestige as the band fulfilled its contract before moving on. That context gives the music a documentary immediacy: this was a working band caught live in the studio, playing the repertoire they knew inside out. Rudy Van Gelder handled the recording, and this 2022 Analogue Productions edition brings the master to life with a fresh lacquer cut by Kevin Gray, pressed at QRP, and dressed in a deluxe high-gloss tip-on jacket that honors Reid Miles' design and Philip Hays' cover art.

The playing is the sound of five masters listening to one another. Miles Davis' trumpet is lyrical and economical, while John Coltrane's tenor pushes with restless intensity, the two frontmen framing very different temperaments. Behind them, Red Garland's crisp, blues-inflected piano, Paul Chambers' supple bass, and "Philly" Joe Jones' propulsive drumming form one of the most swinging rhythm sections in jazz history.

Ira Gitler's original liner notes round out the package, adding period voice to a genuinely essential document. For the collector, the combination of Van Gelder's recording, Gray's mastering, the QRP pressing, and the tell-tale "QRP KEVIN GRAY" stamped in the dead wax makes this a definitive way to own a cornerstone of the hard bop canon.
