Corridors by Kendrick Scott.
There is a quiet drama built into "Corridors," a sense that every track is a room you pass through on your way to somewhere else. Kendrick Scott shapes the album around movement and transition, and the song titles read almost like a map of a house at night, each door leading to the next. It is music about thresholds, arrivals, and the spaces in between.
The A-side opens with the disarming question of "What Day Is It ?," a title that sets the tone for everything that follows: a sense of drifting, of losing your bearings and finding them again. From there the title track "Corridors" stretches out, followed by "A Voice Through The Door" and the first appearance of the album's recurring motif in "One Door Closes." Already you can feel the record circling its own themes, returning to ideas and turning them over.
That idea of return becomes the structural heart of the second side. "One Door Closes" reappears in fuller form as "One Door Closes, Another Opens," and later that phrase splits apart again into "Another Opens," so that the familiar saying is dismantled and rebuilt across the sequence. It is a clever, satisfying bit of sequencing that rewards close listening, the kind of thoughtful arrangement that makes an album feel composed rather than merely assembled.
The B-side also poses its own searching question with "Isn't This My Sound Around Me?," a title that speaks to identity and self-recognition, to an artist listening for his own voice within the music. "Your Destiny Awaits" pushes forward with a sense of forward motion and anticipation, before the record settles into its final resting place with "Threshold," a fitting close for a collection so preoccupied with edges and passages.
Taken as a whole, "Corridors" plays like a meditation on passage and possibility, the doors that shut behind us and the ones that swing open ahead. Scott's conceptual instincts are on full display, and the way the titles echo and recombine gives the album a narrative pull that carries you from the opening question to the final threshold.
For collectors drawn to jazz that thinks in themes and structures, this is a record worth living with. Drop the needle on the A-side and let it carry you through room after room, all the way to the far door.
