Released in 1984, this is Miles Davis in full command of his electric renaissance, a chapter of his career that found the trumpeter embracing new sounds and younger collaborators without losing an ounce of his singular authority. Produced by Davis himself, the record is very much a family affair and a passing of the torch, with keyboardist Robert Irving III co-producing and arranging much of the material, and Davis's nephew Vincent Wilburn stepping in as associate producer. It also marks a poignant reunion, as longtime arranger Gil Evans lends his hand to one track, threading a line back to some of the most celebrated collaborations in jazz history.
Musically, the album balances polished studio craft with the electricity of live performance, drawing on sessions at Record Plant and A&R Studios in New York alongside a track captured live at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Davis's own arrangements dominate the album, his trumpet floating over Irving's contemporary keyboard textures, while the shift between studio precision and onstage spontaneity gives the record a restless, forward-leaning character.
This particular pressing is a treat for collectors: the CBS/Sony Japanese edition, complete with its Obi strip and Japanese liner notes, mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig and wrapped in Gilles Larrain's cover photography. A handsome, well-appointed artifact from one of jazz's most fascinating late periods.
