Demon's Dance by Jackie McLean.

Recorded on December 22, 1967, at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, "Demon's Dance" captures Jackie McLean in a session that would sit in the vaults before finally seeing release in 1970 on Blue Note Records. It arrives with all the hallmarks of the label's classic era, the room, the engineer, and the alto voice that made McLean one of the most distinctive sounds in modern jazz.

The album opens with its title track, "Demon's Dance," a piece that sets the tone for the entire record. From there, side A moves through "Toyland" and closes with "Boo Ann's Grand," a run that shows McLean's gift for balancing forward momentum with lyricism, his tone by turns biting and warm as the music unfolds.

Flip the record and side B carries the same energy into new territory. "Sweet Love Of Mine" leads the way, followed by "Floogeh," and the set closes with "Message From Trane," a title that speaks to the currents of the late 1960s and the deep well of influence that ran through this generation of players. It is a fitting close to a session that looks both inward and outward.

There is a particular pleasure in hearing a 1967 date that waited until 1970 to reach listeners. McLean was always an artist restlessly moving forward, and this music reflects a musician engaged with the harmonic and rhythmic ideas that were reshaping the jazz landscape. The Van Gelder sound gives every note its space, from the attack of the alto to the pulse underneath.

This pressing is a Blue Note Records release with etched runouts, a detail collectors will appreciate when examining the wax up close. For anyone building a serious Blue Note shelf, "Demon's Dance" is an essential chapter in Jackie McLean's story, a document of a great alto player at Van Gelder Studios doing what he did best. It belongs alongside the label's finest, ready to spin from the first bars of the title track through the closing "Message From Trane."
