Destroyer by Kiss.

When Kiss set out to make Destroyer in 1976, they enlisted producer Bob Ezrin to help transform their raw arena energy into something more ambitious, and the result reshaped their sound for good. This 45th anniversary 2-LP deluxe edition gathers the original album alongside a generous trove of demos and rarities, giving the record the expansive treatment it has long deserved.

The first disc holds the album itself, newly remastered and stretched across two sides that move from the roaring opener "Detroit Rock City" through "King Of The Night Time World," "God Of Thunder," and "Great Expectations." The second side runs from "Flaming Youth" and "Sweet Pain" into the anthemic "Shout It Out Loud," the unexpected ballad "Beth," and the closing "Do You Love Me?" It is a set that captures Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss at a pivotal moment, recorded and mixed at Record Plant Recording Studios in New York City, with engineering by Corky Stasiak and Jay Messina.

What makes this edition essential for collectors is everything surrounding that classic album. The third side opens the vault to Paul Stanley demos, including an early "God Of Thunder And Rock And Roll" and demo takes of "Detroit Rock City" and "Love Is Alright," before turning to Gene Simmons demos such as "I Don't Want No Romance," "Rock N' Rolls Royce," and "Star." These rough sketches reveal how these songs took shape long before they hit the finished record.

The fourth side rounds out the package with studio rarities, among them an acoustic mix of "Beth," a mono single edit and an alternate mix of "Shout It Out Loud," a live rehearsal instrumental of "King Of The Night Time World," an instrumental "Detroit Rock City," and an early version of "Flaming Youth." Across the whole set there are 21 total tracks, 10 of them previously unreleased, a real treat for anyone who thought they knew this album inside out.

The presentation matches the ambition. Pressed on 180-gram black vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket that preserves Ken Kelly's iconic cover painting, this version carries the standard Kiss logo. It includes two printed inner sleeves and a 20-page booklet featuring "The Story Of Destroyer" with liner notes and photo research by Ken Sharp, plus rare images from the KISS Archive along with photography by Barry Levine and Waring Abbott.

Mastered and lacquer cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road, this Universal Music Enterprises release from 2021 gives one of hard rock's landmark albums a definitive anniversary edition, blending the familiar with the freshly unearthed for a deeply rewarding listen.
