There are few sights in jazz more thrilling than two master trumpeters squaring off, and "Diz And Roy" captures Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge doing exactly that. This 1977 Polydor collection gathers material originally issued on the Verve albums V-8109, V-8110 and V-8212, drawing together some of the most spirited horn conversations these two giants ever committed to tape. Housed on a classic black label, it's a compilation that lets you hear two distinct trumpet personalities push and challenge each other across a generous span of sides.
The heart of the set is the Trumpet Battle and Trumpet Kings material, where Eldridge and Gillespie trade phrases with real competitive fire. Side A opens with the swinging charge of "I've Found A New Baby," followed by the searching balladry of "I Can't Get Started" and the buoyant "Sometimes I'm Happy." The energy carries into "Trumpet Blues" and the Latin-tinged "Algo Buena," where the two horns weave in and around one another with obvious relish.
One of the record's most rewarding stretches is the "Ballad Medley," a five-part suite drawn from the Trumpet Battle sessions. Across "I'm Thru With Love," "Can't We Be Friends," "Don't You Think," "I Don't Know Why I Love You Like I Do" and "If I Had You," the two trumpeters trade the spotlight, each taking a turn to shape a tender melody. It's a beautiful counterpoint to the fireworks elsewhere, showing that these players could be as lyrical as they were combative.
The Trumpet Kings sequence continues on Side C with a lovely "Blue Moon," the brisk and dazzling "Limehouse Blues," and the good-natured "Pretty Eyed Baby." Most of this material, tracks A1 through C3, was recorded on October 29, 1954 in New York City, giving the bulk of the album a unified sense of place and moment.
The final side belongs to "Tour De Force," which expands the lineup to a trio of trumpeters by adding Harry Edison to the front line alongside Eldridge and Gillespie. Recorded November 2, 1955 in New York City, "Steeplechase" and the title track "Tour De Force" raise the stakes even higher, three horns instead of two, all vying for the same air.
Pressed by Polydor Incorporated, a Polygram Company, and printed in the U.S.A., this issue carries etched master numbers in the runouts along with the stamped MASTERDISK mark, a nod to the mastering house behind the cut. For collectors who love the sound of great trumpeters trading blows and ballads alike, this is an essential document of two, and briefly three, of the horn's finest.
