When two titans of jazz share a studio, history is made. Recorded on August 18, 1962, this celebrated summit brought Coleman Hawkins—the man who essentially invented the tenor saxophone as a jazz voice—into the fold of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. It's a rare and generous meeting: Hawkins was never a permanent Ellington sideman, which makes this collaboration a singular document, captured by legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Bob Thiele.
The chemistry runs deep. Hawkins's robust, romantic tenor threads through an ensemble stacked with Ellington's finest, including the honeyed alto of Johnny Hodges, the warm depth of Harry Carney on baritone sax and bass clarinet, and the versatile Ray Nance on both cornet and violin. Lawrence Brown's trombone, Aaron Bell's bass, and Sam Woodyard's drums round out a band that swings with the elegance and swagger only the Ellington unit could muster, all anchored by Duke himself at the piano.
This 2022 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue is a collector's prize. Remastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound and supervised by Chad Kassem, it arrives in a gatefold sleeve with Joe Alper's photography, Stanley Dance's liner notes, and an 11"x11" insert. Housed in a rice paper inner sleeve, it delivers the intimacy and presence this historic session deserves—a must-have for any serious jazz shelf.
