Electric Mud by Muddy Waters.
Few blues records carry a legend quite like this one. Recorded at Ter Mar Studios in Chicago in May 1968, it was Marshall Chess's audacious attempt to drag Chicago blues headlong into the psychedelic era, reworking Muddy Waters classics for a rock audience raised on fuzz and feedback. Muddy himself famously dismissed it as "dogshit," yet the gamble paid off in the long run: the album introduced his voice to a new generation and has since been reclaimed as a bold, forward-looking experiment. It remains one of the most controversial blues albums ever pressed.
What makes it sing is the collision of Muddy's granite-solid vocals with the arrangements of Charles Stepney, who also produced alongside Gene Barge and Chess. Backed by players drawn from Rotary Connection, the record drenches familiar material like "Mannish Boy" (listed here as "I'm A Man") and "I Just Want to Make Love to You" in swirling, distorted guitar and heavy grooves. It's blues, but refracted through the wildest impulses of late-'60s rock.
This Third Man reissue (TMR-485) is a repress of the 2017 edition, presented in a gatefold jacket with a rounded-corner white paper inner sleeve and hand-etched runouts. For collectors, it's a handsomely produced way to own a genuine curio of blues history — strange, loud, and finally getting the respect it deserves.
