Footprints Live! by Wayne Shorter.
Wayne Shorter's "Footprints Live!" captures the saxophonist and composer in one of the most invigorating phases of his career, drawn from a series of European festival performances during the summer of 2001. This is not a studio abstraction but the real, breathing thing: Shorter and his group stretching out in front of live audiences, reworking pieces from across his deep songbook with the freedom and fire that only concert settings allow.
The record gathers material from three distinct festival dates. Much of it comes from July 20, 2001, at the Festival De Jazz De Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, the source for the opening "Sanctuary" and "Masquelero," as well as the album's title cut, "Footprints." Four more performances, "Valse Triste," "Go," "Aung San Suu Kyi," and "Atlantis," were captured four days later on July 24 at the Jardins du Palais Longchamp in Marseilles, France. The set closes with "Juju," recorded a little earlier in the tour, on July 14 at The Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy.
Spread across four sides, the sequencing moves with real purpose. Side A opens in a reflective, searching mood with "Sanctuary" before "Masquelero" raises the temperature. Side B pairs the wistful "Valse Triste" with the propulsive "Go," while Side C brings the tender "Aung San Suu Kyi" alongside the title piece, "Footprints," a tune Shorter has returned to and reinvented for decades. The final side lifts off with "Atlantis" and lands on "Juju," a fitting nod to the enduring themes that run through his writing.
What makes this collection so rewarding is the way familiar Shorter compositions are given new life on the bandstand. These are not note-for-note recitals; they are conversations, with the tunes serving as launch points for extended interplay and spontaneous invention. The festival atmosphere lends everything an unmistakable energy, the sound of a master composer trusting his material to hold up under the pressure and possibility of live improvisation.
This reissue has been remastered by Kevin Reeves at East Iris Studios, bringing clarity and presence to these open-air performances. The remastering serves the music rather than overwhelming it, preserving the dynamics and space of the original concert recordings so that the detail of each performance comes through with warmth and definition.
For collectors and listeners alike, "Footprints Live!" is an essential document of Wayne Shorter in full command, a set that rewards close listening across all four sides. It belongs on the shelf of anyone drawn to jazz that values both composition and the thrill of the moment.
