Give Me The Night by George Benson.
"Give Me The Night" arrived in 1980 as a landmark moment where jazz guitar mastery met the sleek, polished ambition of Quincy Jones production. Released on Warner Bros. Records under catalog number HS 3453, this record found George Benson stepping fully into the role of crossover star, blending the fluid, singing tone of his guitar with a voice that carried equal warmth. It remains one of the defining statements of his career, a set that refused to choose between the dance floor and the listening chair.
The album opens with the shimmering "Love X Love" before moving through the effervescent "Off Broadway" and the vocal showcase "Moody's Mood," a nod to the jazz tradition that runs beneath all the gloss. The title track, "Give Me The Night," sits at the close of side A, its groove instantly recognizable and endlessly imitated. Side B stretches out further with the Latin flavored "Dinorah, Dinorah," the lush "Love Dance," and the intimate closer "Turn Out The Lamplight," giving the record a shape that moves from celebration to tenderness.
The personnel reads like a summit of the era's finest players. Quincy Jones produced, with Bruce Swedien handling the recording and mixing that gives the album its immaculate depth. Herbie Hancock appears throughout on electric piano, Fender Rhodes, and synthesizer, weaving harmonic color into tracks like "Love Dance" and "Star Of A Story (X)." Lee Ritenour adds a second guitar voice, while the rhythm section rotates between Abraham Laboriel and Louis Johnson on bass and John Robinson and Carlos Vega on drums. Paulinho Da Costa's percussion threads through nearly every cut.
The horn charts crackle with the signature brightness of the period, courtesy of Jerry Hey on trumpet alongside Kim Hutchcroft and Larry Williams doubling on saxophone and flute. Greg Phillinganes, Michael Boddicker, and Richard Tee layer in additional keyboards and synthesizers, while a deep bench of backing vocalists including Patti Austin, Diva Gray, Jim Gilstrap, Jocelyn Allen, and Tom Bahler lifts the ensemble numbers. Patti Austin also steps forward to share lead vocals on "Moody's Mood" and "Love Dance." Quincy Jones contributed the liner notes, and Kent Duncan handled the mastering.
The visual presentation matches the sophistication of the music, with cover photography by Norman Seeff, sleeve photography by Peter Brill, art direction by Richard Seireeni, and photo illustration by Paul Jasmin. This particular pressing was made in the U.S.A. and features the Qwest logo in monochrome rather than color, with a "TM" printed beneath it on the back cover. It was issued with a printed inner sleeve bearing the 1980 Warner Bros. copyright and the HS 3453 catalog number.
