Great Jazz Standards by Gil Evans And His Orchestra.

Few arrangers ever commanded the orchestral palette with the imagination that Gil Evans brought to the studio, and "Great Jazz Standards" stands as a testament to his gift for reharmonizing familiar material into something wholly his own. Recorded across early 1959 and a session dated February 5, 1959 in New York City, this collection finds Evans and his orchestra reworking a set of pieces drawn from across the jazz tradition, giving each one the depth and texture that became his signature.

The program moves with real breadth, opening on the vintage warmth of "Davenport Blues" and Thelonious Monk's "Straight No Chaser" before easing into the aching lyricism of "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men" and the bright optimism of Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring." Side two carries the same range, from the stately elegance of John Lewis's "Django" to the wry, serpentine turns of "Chant Of The Weed" and the closing "Theme." Together they show how thoroughly Evans could reshape a melody, coloring it with unexpected voicings and shifting shades of brass and reeds.

This edition arrives as part of the celebrated Blue Note Tone Poet Series, the audiophile reissue line devoted to presenting classic recordings with the utmost care. The reissue was supervised by Joe Harley and cut directly from the original analog tapes, with mastering handled by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. It was manufactured at Record Technology Inc. on 180 gram vinyl, with etched runouts, the hallmark of a pressing made to be heard as its makers intended.

The presentation reflects the same attention to detail. The record includes an 11.5" x 11.5" monochrome single side printed insert, and the protective clear plastic bag carries the distinctive Blue Note Tone Poet Series hype sticker to the front. As a technical note preserved from the source, there are brief tape glitches on the master of "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men" and "Chant Of The Weed," artifacts carried over faithfully from the original tapes rather than corrected or obscured.

Originally a Richard Bock Production released by World Pacific Records in 1959, "Great Jazz Standards" now reaches listeners once more as a Blue Note Records release, issued in 2023 by UMG Recordings, Inc. It remains a beautifully realized document of Evans at a pivotal moment in his career, an arranger reimagining the canon with wit and grandeur.

For collectors of Gil Evans, admirers of the Tone Poet Series, or anyone drawn to the golden age of orchestral jazz, this is an essential addition to the shelf, a record that rewards close listening every time it spins.
