Hard Again by Muddy Waters.

When Muddy Waters entered the studio for Hard Again, he did so with a young Johnny Winter behind the boards, a pairing that turned out to be one of the great acts of reverence and revival in the blues. Winter, a devoted disciple, didn't just produce the record—he stepped in as a guitarist too, helping reignite Waters' career and reminding the world what raw, unvarnished Chicago blues could sound like when it was played with total conviction rather than polish.

The band assembled here is a summit of talent. Waters' commanding vocals and guitar anchor everything, while James Cotton's harp wails and cuts with fierce authority. Pinetop Perkins lays down rolling, deep-pocketed piano, and the rhythm section of Charles Calmese on bass and Willie Smith on drums keeps the whole thing driving hard. With Bob Margolin and Winter trading guitar work, the interplay crackles with a live, in-the-room energy that feels caught rather than constructed.

This 2020 reissue does justice to that intensity, pressed on 180-gram audiophile black vinyl and housed in a single jacket with a classic black paper and plastic-polylined inner sleeve. It's a faithful edition, distinguished only by a slightly different runout. For collectors, it's an essential document of Muddy at full, roaring power—a record that rewards a good system and repeated spins.
