Home by Jan Gunnar Hoff.
There is a particular kind of stillness that comes from a room built for sound, and you can hear it all over "Home" by Jan Gunnar Hoff. Recorded in Stormen konserthus in Bodø, Norway, during August 2021, this is a record that carries the quiet grandeur of its surroundings. The concert hall becomes something close to an instrument itself, giving each note room to breathe, decay, and settle into silence before the next one arrives.
The album opens with "What Miight Have Been," a title that sets the reflective, searching tone that runs through the whole first side. From there, "Hike" and "Magma" move through contrasting moods, one suggesting motion and open air, the other something warmer and more elemental. "Barndomsminne Fra Nordland," a memory of childhood in Nordland, roots the music firmly in the northern Norwegian landscape where it was captured, before "Kanskje" closes the side with a sense of gentle uncertainty.
Side B turns toward the familiar and reimagines it. Hoff takes on "Summertime" and "Moon River," two of the most beloved melodies in the American songbook, and lets them unfold with the same unhurried care that shapes his original writing. These are pieces most listeners will already know by heart, which makes it all the more rewarding to hear them approached with such patience and personal phrasing.
The second half also returns to Norwegian tradition with "Bruremarsj Fra Beiarn," a bridal march from Beiarn, sitting comfortably beside originals like "Free Flow" and the closing "Meditatutus." That pairing of local folk material with jazz sensibility and standards is the heart of what makes "Home" so fitting a title. The record moves easily between borrowed songs and remembered places, treating all of them as part of one continuous emotional language.
The recording itself was handled by Lindberg Lyd AS, an engineering outfit well regarded for capturing acoustic music with clarity and depth, and it shows in the way the piano sits in space here. Plating was carried out at Stamper Discs. Everything about the production favors transparency, letting the natural resonance of the performance come through without heavy studio intervention.
For collectors drawn to contemporary European jazz, to solo and small ensemble piano work, or simply to beautifully recorded acoustic albums, "Home" offers a great deal to return to. It rewards close listening in a quiet room, but it also works as a companion for slower hours, a set of pieces that feel both introspective and generous. Few records make their sense of place this audible, and fewer still make it sound this welcoming.
