Few records capture Hugh Masekela at his most restless and adventurous quite like "Hugh Masekela's Latest." Here the South African trumpeter moves freely across borders, blending the horn lines of his homeland with soul, pop, and Brazilian rhythm. It is a snapshot of an artist unwilling to sit still, pulling from every direction and reshaping it into something warm, groove-driven, and entirely his own.
The album opens with a run of soulful energy, from the propulsive "Baby, Baby, Baby" into a striking reading of "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)," where Masekela lends his voice as well as his trumpet. His singing surfaces across the record, appearing on "Groove Me," "Thula," and later on the tender stretch of "I Just Wasn't Meant For These Times" and "Here, There And Everywhere," giving the set an intimate, personal thread that runs beneath the instrumental fire.
Side B leans into a broader palette, with "Arrastao" and "Reza (Laia Ladaia)" carrying a distinctly Brazilian pulse, while "Mago" and the closing "Mazeze" nod back toward the African roots that Masekela never strayed far from.
