I Long To See You by Charles Lloyd & The Marvels.

There are records that announce themselves, and there are records that simply open a door and wait for you to walk through. "I Long To See You" by Charles Lloyd & The Marvels belongs firmly to the latter. Spread across a double LP housed in a gatefold with an insert, it is a document of a saxophonist in a reflective, expansive mood, gathering songs of longing, protest, and prayer into a single unhurried statement.

Most of the music here was captured over two days at Santa Barbara Sound Design in April 2015, on the 27th and 28th. That studio warmth runs through the sequence, from the opening reading of Bob Dylan's "Masters Of War" to the traditional ache of "Shenandoah" and the hymnal weight of "Abide With Me." The one exception is "Sombrero Sam," recorded live at the Lobero Theatre on April 28, 2015, a moment lifted from the stage and set among the studio pieces so that the album breathes with two kinds of air.

Lloyd's program is a study in how a jazz sensibility can absorb almost anything and make it feel like home. "La Llorona" carries the pull of Mexican folk tradition, while "All My Trials" and "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream" reach toward spiritual and pacifist songbooks that stretch far beyond the usual jazz canon. His own "Of Course, Of Course" and the closing "Barche Lamsel" show the composer's hand, and "You Are So Beautiful" arrives as a tender, familiar embrace to round out the third side.

The publishing credits map the record's wide reach, moving from Special Rider Music through Forest Farm Music across most of the set, with Almanac Music and the Irving Music and Almo Music pairing accounting for the rest. It is the kind of clearance list that only makes sense on an album this generous in its borrowing, one that treats a protest anthem and a wedding-day standard as equal citizens of the same emotional territory.

Two notable guests deepen the occasion. Bill Frisell appears courtesy of Okeh Records and Sony Entertainment, his guitar a natural partner for Lloyd's open, singing lines. Willie Nelson appears courtesy of Legacy Recordings, lending a voice steeped in exactly the plainspoken Americana these songs invite. Their presence turns the record into a meeting of worlds, jazz, country, and folk gathered around a single microphone.

Made in the U.S.A. and presented as a gatefold pressing with its accompanying insert, this is a release for listeners who value mood over spectacle. Put it on and let the songs unfold in order; "I Long To See You" rewards patience with something quietly, lastingly beautiful.
