I'm Ready by Muddy Waters.

There are records that document a legend, and there are records that reintroduce one. "I'm Ready" belongs firmly in the second camp, a late chapter in the Muddy Waters story that finds the man still very much in command of his voice and his material. From the opening title track through to the final notes, this is Chicago blues delivered by an artist with nothing left to prove and everything still to say.

The heart of the album is Muddy Waters himself, his vocals carrying the same authority that made him one of the defining figures of the blues. Around him sits a band built for both muscle and nuance. Bob Margolin holds down the bass, Willie Smith drives the rhythm on drums, and Pinetop Perkins fills the corners with piano that swings between barrelhouse fire and quiet menace. It is a lineup that understands restraint, letting the songs breathe rather than crowding them.

The production comes courtesy of Johnny Winter, whose reverence for Muddy runs through every choice made here. Winter also shares mixing duties with engineer Dave Still, and the result is a record that sounds warm and unhurried, with each instrument given room to speak. Greg Calbi handled the mastering, lending the whole set a clarity that serves both the ballads and the harder-driving numbers.

The track selection moves with real intent. Side A opens with the swagger of the title cut, then travels through "33 Years," "Who Do You Trust," and "Copper Brown," each one a different shade of the blues. Side B leans into some of the most enduring material in the catalog, anchored by "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man," and rounded out by "Mamie," "Rock Me," "Screamin' And Cryin'," and a closing turn through "Good Morning Little School Girl." It is a program that balances the familiar with the deeper cuts, giving the listener a full portrait rather than a greatest-hits sprint.

Even the packaging carries weight. The cover painting comes from Philip Hays, whose artwork gives the release a visual identity as distinctive as the music inside. It is the kind of sleeve that earns a place facing outward on the shelf, a piece worth studying while the record spins.

A note for collectors: the pressing plant here is uncredited on the release itself, identified instead by the stamped runout pattern in the dead wax. It is a small detail, but exactly the sort of thing that gives a record its character and its story. For anyone building a serious Muddy Waters shelf, or simply looking for a Chicago blues record with real conviction behind it, this one belongs in the running.
