Few pairings in jazz history carry the quiet magnetism of Clark Terry and Thelonious Monk, and "In Orbit" captures them in a setting that flatters both. Recorded in New York on May 7 and 12, 1958, this Riverside session finds Terry stepping to the front with his flugelhorn, an instrument he did much to legitimize as a lead voice in modern jazz. The warmth and roundness of that horn set the tone across nine tracks, from the buoyant title cut "In Orbit" to the closing meditation of "Very Near Blue."
The lineup is a study in balance. Terry's flugelhorn floats over the rhythmic bedrock laid down by Sam Jones on bass and "Philly" Joe Jones on drums, a combination that swings with both muscle and finesse. And then there is Monk on piano, playing sideman here rather than leader, sprinkling his unmistakable angular logic through the harmonies. His presence lends pieces like "Let's Cool One," one of his own compositions, a knowing, off center charm.
The program moves easily between moods. "One Foot In The Gutter" leans into a bluesy, earthy groove, while "Trust In Me" softens the pace with a ballad's tenderness. On the flip side, "Pea-Eye," "Argentia," and "Buck's Business" keep the energy varied and conversational, and "Moonlight Fiesta" adds a splash of color to the sequence. Throughout, the interplay never feels crowded; there is a spaciousness that lets each voice register clearly.
This reissue was produced under the care of Craft Recordings, with the original session guided by producer Orrin Keepnews, who also supplied the liner notes. Jack Higgins engineered the date. For this edition, the audio was mastered by Kevin Gray, who also cut the lacquer, bringing modern precision to a classic tape. Martin Williams contributes liner notes printed on the obi, adding further context to the music within.
The package retains the character of the original release. Paul Bacon designed the cover, and Jack Manning provided the cover photograph, elements that root the record firmly in its late 1950s Riverside identity. Riverside Records were released by Bill Grauer Productions, inc., and this pressing carries the ℗2024 and ©1958 Craft Recordings notice, manufactured and distributed by Concord, and made in the U.S.A.
One important detail for collectors and listeners alike: although the artwork indicates stereo, the record itself plays in mono. That single channel presentation suits the intimacy of the session beautifully, drawing the flugelhorn, piano, bass, and drums into a focused, cohesive whole. "In Orbit" remains an essential document of Terry's artistry and a rare chance to hear Monk supporting another leader with generosity and wit.
