Infinity by Lee Morgan.
There are certain sessions that carry the unmistakable energy of a musician at full stride, and "Infinity" captures Lee Morgan in exactly that state. Recorded on November 16, 1965, at the legendary Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, this is a document of Blue Note in one of its most fertile periods, when the label was releasing some of the sharpest hard bop and post bop the music has ever known.
The album opens with its title track, "Infinity," a piece that sets the tone for everything that follows, before sliding into the warm, swinging pocket of "Miss Nettie B." These two cuts anchor the A side and show off the kind of melodic clarity and rhythmic drive that made Morgan such a singular voice on the trumpet.
Turn the record over and the B side unfolds across three distinct moods. "Growing Pains" leads the way, followed by the tender, lyrical "Portrait Of Doll," a title that promises exactly the kind of ballad craftsmanship this era of Blue Note did so well. The set closes with "Zip Code," a fitting final statement that leaves the listener wanting to lower the needle all over again.
This particular pressing comes to us as a Blue Note Records release, part of the deep catalog that Universal Music has continued to steward with care. The back cover carries a ℗ 1981 Capitol Records, LLC credit alongside a © 2023 UMG Recordings, Inc. line, distributed by Universal Music Enterprises, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc. The runouts are etched, a detail collectors will appreciate when they inspect the dead wax.
The Van Gelder name attached to this session is no small thing. Rudy Van Gelder's studio was the sonic laboratory where so much of the Blue Note sound was forged, and recordings made there have a depth and presence that continue to reward attentive listening on vinyl. Spinning "Infinity" is a chance to hear that craftsmanship the way it was meant to be experienced.
For anyone building a collection of Lee Morgan or simply seeking out the golden run of mid sixties Blue Note dates, this is a record that belongs on the shelf and, more importantly, on the turntable. From the title track to "Zip Code," it rewards repeated plays and settles comfortably into any serious jazz library here at
