Few debut albums announce their intentions as boldly as this one. "Introducing The Eleventh House" gathers a formidable cast around guitarist Larry Coryell, whose name appears alongside the band's on the spine and center labels as "The Eleventh House With Larry Coryell." From the opening flurry of "Birdfingers" through the closing charge of "Right On Y'all," this is fusion played with muscle, wit, and an appetite for adventure.
The lineup is stacked with players who bring both fire and finesse. Coryell's guitar leads the way, but the record thrives on interplay: Randy Brecker's trumpet cutting bright lines through the mix, Mike Mandel coloring the arrangements with piano and synthesizer, Danny Trifan anchoring things on bass, and Alphonse Mouzon driving the whole enterprise on percussion, appearing here courtesy of Blue Note Records. It is a band built to push and pull against itself, and the tension is part of the thrill.
The material moves with real variety across both sides. Side A dances from the loping swing of "The Funky Waltz" and the catchy strut of "Low-Lee-Tah" into the aggressive "Adam Smasher" and the propulsive "Joy Ride." Turn it over and the palette deepens with the atmospheric "Yin," the lyrical "Theme For A Dream," and the soulful groove of "Gratitude 'A So Low,'" before "Ism - Ejercicio" and the exuberant finale send things off in high spirits. The writing credits reflect the collaborative spirit, with tunes drawn from Coryell, Mouzon, and the band's own publishing.
The record was cut at Vanguard's 23rd Street Studio in New York City, with David Baker handling engineering and mixing and Danny Weiss producing. Tom Paine and Vince Cirrincione are credited with management, a reminder of the working machinery behind a young band making its mark in the early fusion era.
The packaging is as striking as the music. The front cover art comes from Jacques Wyrs, credited on the sleeve as "Visions Cosmiques de Jacques Wyrs," a fittingly cosmic frame for the sounds within. Jules Halfant handled the cover design, with photography by Steve Prezant, and the jacket was printed in the U.S.A.
Collectors will appreciate the small quirks that make an original pressing worth seeking out. The closing track, listed on the jacket as "Right On Y'all," appears on the center label as "Right On Ya'll," one of those charming inconsistencies that gives a period record its character.
