Recorded across four December days in 1985 at RCA Studio A in New York City, "J Mood" captures Wynton Marsalis at a pivotal moment, stepping into a leaner, more introspective quartet setting. Committed to tape digitally, then remixed and mastered at CBS Studios, the record carries a clarity and immediacy that suits its searching, unhurried mood. This is Marsalis the trumpet stylist, working close to the ground with a band that listens as hard as it plays.
The quartet here is a study in chemistry. Marcus Roberts sits at the piano, his touch both spare and probing; Robert Hurst anchors the low end on bass; and Jeff "Tain" Watts brings his unmistakable rhythmic fire to the drums. Together they move through the title track, "J Mood," and the aching "Presence That Lament Brings" with a conversational ease, while "Insane Asylum" closes the first side on a more turbulent note.
Flip to side two and the group stretches further. "Skain's Domain" and "Melōdiqúe" show off the interplay between horn and rhythm section, each musician given room to breathe, while "After" and "Much Later" carry the session toward its quiet, reflective conclusion. Across all seven pieces, there is a sense of a band discovering its own language, unforced and deeply attentive to space and dynamics.
The production pedigree is first-rate. Steve Epstein produced the session, with George Butler serving as executive producer. Tim Geelan handled chief engineering and the remix, assisted by Dennis Ferrante, and Vlado Meller mastered the record at CBS Studios. The result is a document that honors both the intimacy of the small group and the precision of a carefully mounted studio effort.
Visually, the album is every bit as considered as the music. The cover carries an illustration by Romare Bearden, the celebrated collagist whose work brings a distinctly jazz-rooted sensibility to the jacket.
