Recorded in the unlikely setting of Pierce Hall at the All Souls Unitarian Church in Washington D.C. on February 13, 1962, this album arrived at the exact moment American ears were opening to the rhythms of Brazil. Under producer Creed Taylor, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd set out to interpret, as the back cover puts it, "fresh, contemporary sounds from modern Brazilian folk music." The result was a landmark that helped ignite the bossa nova craze in the United States and yielded the hit single "Desafinado."
The pairing of Getz and Byrd is the heart of the record. Getz brings his famously warm, breathy tenor tone, phrasing with an unhurried lyricism that suits these gently swaying melodies. Byrd's nylon-string guitar supplies the authentic Brazilian foundation, and he's supported by a nimble rhythm section featuring Keter Betts and Gene Byrd on bass, with Buddy Deppenschmidt and Bill Reichenbach handling the subtle, brush-driven percussion. Together they achieve a relaxed intimacy that never loses its rhythmic pulse.
