On March 7, 1958, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, two of the most distinctive voices in modern jazz met on tape for a session that has long stood as a quiet classic. Kenny Burrell, whose warm, blues-inflected guitar phrasing made him one of the most in-demand players of his generation, joined forces with John Coltrane, then on the cusp of the seismic developments that would define the coming decade. The result is a record that pairs Burrell's easy lyricism with Coltrane's searching tenor, a meeting of temperaments that generates its own gentle friction.
The program moves with unhurried confidence. Side A opens with "Freight Trane," a nod to the saxophonist woven right into the title, before slipping into the standard "I Never Knew" and the sleek "Lyresto." Side B offers the tender ballad "Why Was I Born," where Burrell's touch is at its most conversational, and closes with "Big Paul," a feature that leaves plenty of room for the rhythm section to stretch.
And what a rhythm section it is. Paul Chambers anchors the date on bass, Jimmy Cobb keeps time with his signature crispness on drums, and Tommy Flanagan brings his elegant, understated pianism to every track. Together they form an ideal foundation, supple enough to breathe behind Burrell's guitar and firm enough to push Coltrane forward. It is a lineup drawn from the very heart of the late-fifties New York scene, and their chemistry is audible throughout.
This edition, released by Craft Recordings in 2024 under license from the 1963 catalog, treats the original tapes with the care they deserve. The all-analog mastering was handled by Matthew Lutthans at Coherent Audio, who cut the lacquers directly from the original master tapes, an AAA chain that preserves the room sound Van Gelder captured. The record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, a combination that lets the natural warmth of that Hackensack session come through with clarity and body.
The presentation honors the original as well. Don Schlitten's cover photography and design return, and the package carries liner notes from Robert Levine along with obi notes penned by the great Harvey Pekar, whose writing on jazz was as passionate as it was perceptive. Bob Weinstock's supervision ties the release back to its Prestige-era lineage, and Stylianos Gianakos's sculptural artwork rounds out the visual world of the record.
For collectors and listeners alike, this is a chance to hear Burrell and Coltrane at a rare intersection, presented with the fidelity and craft the music has always warranted.
