King Bee by Muddy Waters.

Released in 1981, this record captures Muddy Waters near the end of his career yet still commanding the full authority of a blues elder. It arrived through a fruitful late partnership with Johnny Winter, who both produced and mixed the sessions—a collaboration that helped reintroduce Waters to a new generation while honoring the deep Chicago blues tradition he had done so much to define. Rounded out by strong production credits and Paula Scher's striking design work, it stands as a considered, carefully assembled album rather than a mere late-catalog afterthought.

Musically, the appeal lies in that meeting of two blues sensibilities. Winter's production keeps the arrangements tight and unfussy, letting Waters' voice sit front and center with the weathered gravity it had earned over decades. Dave Still's engineering and Gregg Mann's assistance in the mix give the record a clean, present sound, so the interplay between vocal and band lands with real punch and clarity.

For collectors, provenance is everything here: seek the original pressing with the JZ prefix on both label and jacket spine, since the similar-looking PZ copies are later issues. With mastering and lacquer cut handled by Greg Calbi, the pressing rewards a good system. It's a satisfying spin and a genuine piece of blues history—a late statement from a master, produced with care and worth owning in its true first form.
