"Live" At The Village Vanguard by John Coltrane.

Few live jazz documents carry the raw electricity of John Coltrane's stand at The Village Vanguard, captured in New York City on November 2 and 3, 1961. This is Coltrane at a moment of restless exploration, stretching the language of the tenor saxophone into new and searching territory. Originally released in 1962 on Impulse! Records, the recording has long stood as a landmark of the era, a snapshot of an artist pushing hard against the boundaries of what jazz could be.

The program is spare but weighty. Side A opens with "Spiritual," a deep and hymn-like meditation that unfolds with patience and gathering intensity, before "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" brings a more familiar melodic frame that Coltrane and his group reshape in their own image. Side B is given over entirely to "Chasin' The Trane," a marathon blues that has become the stuff of legend, an unbroken exercise in endurance and invention that leaves the listener breathless.

This Acoustic Sounds Series reissue treats the music with the care it deserves. Mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound directly from the original analog tapes, the pressing preserves the immediacy of the Vanguard's intimate room, where every breath and rustle feels close enough to touch. The tapes have been handled by top mastering engineers, with the series itself supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds.

The physical presentation matches the quality of the sound. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, the record is housed in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket printed at Stoughton Printing Company, the kind of substantial, tactile package that recalls the golden age of album production. The vinyl rests inside a non-labelled rice paper inner sleeve, and the release includes the Acoustic Sound Series color insert for titles beginning in 2020.

This is a Verve Records release, issued as a 2021 UMG Recordings pressing and distributed by Universal Music Enterprises. It carries the catalogue number A-10 on the sleeve and A-10-S on the labels, with etched runouts on both sides save for the "STERLING" stamp that marks Sterling Sound's work. Printed in the U.S.A., it is a faithful and beautifully realized presentation of one of Coltrane's defining live statements.

For collectors and listeners drawn to the fire of Coltrane's early sixties work, this edition offers both the authority of the original tapes and the craftsmanship of a modern audiophile reissue. It is a record built to be played and lived with, delivering the sound of a night at the Vanguard with clarity, presence, and lasting power.
