Live by Chick Corea Akoustic Band.
Captured live at SPC Music Hall in St. Petersburg, Florida on January 13, 2018, this recording finds the Chick Corea Akoustic Band in full flight before an audience. There is an immediacy here that studio work rarely achieves, the sound of a group listening hard to one another and following the music wherever it leads. Spread generously across a multiple-record set, the performance unfolds with the patience and drama of a full concert evening.
The program moves easily between Corea originals and pieces drawn from across the jazz and popular songbook. His own compositions anchor the set, with "Morning Sprite" opening the first side and "Eternal Child" closing out side D. The band clearly relishes the trickier corners of his writing, offering "Humpty Dumpty" not once but twice, first as a Set 1 reading on side C and later returning to it on side F for a second, fresh interpretation. "You're Everything" brings the concert home with a familiar Corea signature.
Standards and jazz classics fill out the sides with warmth and variety. "That Old Feeling" and "Summer Night" lend a lyrical, romantic sweep, while "You And The Night And The Music" pushes toward brighter, more propulsive territory. The band pays its respects to two towering figures of the tradition as well, threading Duke Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood" and Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Mood" into the program, a nod to the lineage the Akoustic Band draws upon.
The set also makes room for pieces with a distinct color of their own. "Japanese Waltz" and "Rhumba Flamenco," both surfacing early in the sequence, hint at the rhythmic and melodic curiosity that always ran through Corea's music. "On Green Dolphin Street," long a proving ground for jazz musicians, opens side D and gives the trio ample room to stretch, trade, and reshape a well-worn vehicle into something of their own.
As an object, this is a handsome pressing. Issued under the ℗ & © 2018 Chick Corea Productions, Inc. banner and made in the U.K., it arrives in a trifold cover that opens out to hold the extended running time in style. The runouts are stamped, a detail collectors tend to appreciate, and the publishing credits trace the varied sources of the material, from Songs of Universal and Crystal Silence Music to the catalogs behind the standards.
For anyone drawn to Corea's acoustic playing and the interplay of a working band caught in the moment, this live document is a rewarding listen from start to finish. Thirteen performances across six sides make it a record built for a long, unhurried evening on the turntable.
