Love Scenes by Diana Krall.
Diana Krall's "Love Scenes" arrives on vinyl as a double LP spread across four sides, a format that lets the music breathe and gives each of its twelve songs the room it deserves. This pressing comes courtesy of The Verve Music Group, a Division of UMG Recordings, Inc., with a phonographic copyright of 2014 and a subsequent 2016 issue. Manufactured in the EU according to the sleeve, with a sticker noting production in Germany, it is a European pressing built for the discerning listener who wants Krall's warm, intimate performances on wax.
The program opens with "All Or Nothing At All," a bold declaration that sets the tone before easing into the sly, playful "Peel Me A Grape" and the swinging charm of "I Don't Know Enough About You." From the first groove, Krall's approach is clear: unhurried, conversational, and deeply attuned to the space between notes. These are songs about longing and flirtation, delivered with a knowing smile.
Side B carries the mood deeper with "I Miss You So," the Gershwin standard "They Can't Take That Away From Me," and the smoky, late-night ache of "Lost Mind." It is the kind of sequence that rewards a quiet room and a low light, where Krall's phrasing can wrap itself around each lyric without rush or clutter.
Flip to side C and the album settles into some of its most tender territory, beginning with "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You," followed by the wry "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me" and the gentle sway of "Gentle Rain." Across these three tracks, the balance of standards and mood pieces shows why this record has become a touchstone for anyone drawn to vocal jazz that favors feeling over flash.
The final side closes the set with real grace. "How Deep Is The Ocean (How High Is The Sky)" opens with its timeless question, "My Love Is" follows, and "Garden In The Rain" brings the album to a soft, reflective landing. By the time the needle lifts, the record has traced a full arc through desire, doubt, and devotion, all in Krall's unmistakable register.
For collectors and newcomers alike, "Love Scenes" spread across two records is an inviting way to experience one of contemporary jazz vocal music's most beloved sessions. Sourced through Verve's respected catalog and pressed in Germany, it is a title that belongs on the shelf of anyone who appreciates the quiet power of a great voice, a piano, and a well chosen songbook.
