Monterey Jazz Festival 1963 by Miles Davis.

Miles Davis at his creative peak, pushing musicians to explore what they don't know.

Musical Analysis:
Miles Davis leads with distinctive artistry, creating intricate interplay between musicians. The harmonic progressions and rhythm section showcase the evolution of jazz with spontaneous brilliance.

Album Story:

This performance captures Miles Davis at a crucial crossroads—he was suffering severely from sickle cell disease and had canceled so many appearances that he was being sued by promoters and struggling to get engagements. After splitting with John Coltrane in 1960 and watching his legendary sextet dissolve, Davis was in something of a creative lull with no studio projects and a difficult live reputation. Yet on September 20, 1963, he stepped onto the Monterey stage with a new quintet that would change jazz history.

The lineup featured George Coleman on saxophone alongside three musicians who would soon become legends: Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and a teenage Tony Williams on drums. This recording represents a missing link between Davis's earlier work and his second great quintet—when George Coleman would be replaced by Wayne Shorter, this same group would go on to create some of the most highly regarded jazz albums of all time. The performance includes a powerful eleven-minute rendition of "So What" that shows Davis pushing his classic material to the breaking point, hinting at the revolutionary directions his music would soon take.
