Mr. Shing-A-Ling by Lou Donaldson.
Lou Donaldson delivers transformative artistry in this essential recording.
Musical Analysis:
Lou Donaldson leads with distinctive artistry, creating intricate interplay between musicians. The harmonic progressions and rhythm section showcase the evolution of jazz with spontaneous brilliance.
Album Story:
Mr. Shing-A-Ling features Lou Donaldson's funky version of "Ode to Billie Joe," which has become the most sampled track in Blue Note history. Hip-hop legends including A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, Drake, Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige, J Dilla, De La Soul, and Eminem have all drawn inspiration from this track, making it a foundational piece of the sampling culture that connected jazz to modern hip-hop production.
The album was recorded on October 27, 1967, at Van Gelder Studio when Donaldson was just four days shy of his 41st birthday. While it's long been considered the best of Donaldson's late-60s funk/soul albums, it has sometimes been overlooked because it appeared between two other outstanding albums—Alligator Bogaloo (which came out three months earlier) and Midnight Creeper (recorded in March 1968). The quintet featured an all-star lineup including trumpeter Blue Mitchell, organist Lonnie Smith, guitarist Jimmy Ponder, and drummer Leo Morris (later known as Idris Muhammad).
