My All New Life Story by Bobo Jenkins.

Some records arrive fully formed, complete with liner notes and legend. Others, like this one, feel like they were pulled from the dust of a forgotten Detroit studio and handed to you still humming. "My All New Life Story" gathers the rare 1970s recordings of Bobo Jenkins, a Detroit blues figure whose name never traveled far beyond his own city, but whose music carries the unmistakable snap of a man who wrote and lived every word.

Everything here was cut inside Jenkins' own Big Star Records Recording Studios, and you can hear it. The hype sticker promises "wild electric guitar, wah-wah bass, ringing phones and all," and that last detail tells you exactly what kind of listen this is. These are not scrubbed, sanitized studio takes. They are raw, homespun, and alive with the accidents of the room. The bass slinks around under a coat of wah-wah, the guitar spikes and stings, and the whole thing feels like you have been let into a session that nobody expected to become a collector's item.

Bobo Jenkins wrote every song on the record, and that authorship gives the set its backbone. Side A opens with the rolling "New 44 Blues" and moves through the swagger of "I Love That Woman," the traditional-rooted "Shake Em On Down," and the heartache of "Here I Am A Fool In Love Again." Then comes "Watergate Blues," a reminder that Jenkins kept one eye on the world outside the studio while pouring the rest of himself into the twelve-bar tradition.

Side B stays just as personal. "If You Were The Only Woman" and "Trying To Get You Off My Mind" work the eternal territory of love and its aftermath, while "Share Cropper Blues" and "24 Years" reach back into harder ground, the stuff of memory and labor and long stretches of time. It is a record that swings between the intimate and the historical without ever losing its rough, human edge.

The reissue was handled with real care. Warren Defever cut the lacquer and mastered the audio, and Fred Reif contributed the liner notes that set Jenkins' story in context for listeners meeting him for the first time. It arrives with an insert and slips into a black paper inner sleeve, the small touches that make a collector's edition feel considered rather than tossed off.

Pressed for Record Store Day 2021, this edition is limited to 1500 copies on striking Purple Splatter vinyl. For anyone drawn to obscure regional blues, unvarnished home-studio grit, or the thrill of a lost voice finally getting its due, this is a record worth chasing down.
