Nick Of Time by Bonnie Raitt.

Few records arrive at exactly the right moment for both the artist and the listener, but "Nick Of Time" is one of them. Bonnie Raitt's voice, weathered and warm, sits at the very center of this album, carrying songs of love, resilience, and hard-won self-knowledge with the ease of someone who has lived every line. From the title track that opens side A to the closing swagger of "The Road's My Middle Name," this is Raitt speaking plainly and singing beautifully.

Side A alone makes the case. The reflective "Nick Of Time" gives way to the buoyant "Thing Called Love," then the tender ache of "Love Letter" and "Cry On My Shoulder." "Real Man" and "Nobody's Girl" round out the first half with a mix of grit and grace, showcasing the range that Raitt brings to every performance. Turn to side B and the momentum continues through "Have A Heart," "Too Soon To Tell," and the determined "I Will Not Be Denied."

Behind the boards is Don Was, whose production gives the album its uncluttered, intimate feel. Rather than crowding the songs, Was leaves room for Raitt's voice to breathe, letting every phrase land with intention. Ed Cherney handled the recording and mixing, working alongside a deep team of assistant engineers including Charlie Paakkari, Clark Germain, Jim Mitchell, Martin Schmelzle, and Vincent Leslie Jones. The care in the studio is audible in every track.

This is the Back to Black 25th anniversary edition, a pressing that treats the album with the reverence it deserves. Remastered from the original analogue tapes and cut to 180 gram heavyweight vinyl, it delivers the depth and presence that made "Nick Of Time" a touchstone. The sticker on the front notes the anniversary status, the heavyweight vinyl, and a voucher to download an mp3 version of the album, giving you both the tactile pleasure of the record and the convenience of digital.

The package extends to the visual presentation as well. Tommy Steele handled art direction, with design by Larry Vigon Studio and photography by Deborah Frankel. Paul Starr took care of make-up and Gina Furth handled hair, while management came from Danny Goldberg and Ron Stone. It is a complete and considered production, front to back.

For any collector building a shelf of essential singer-songwriter and blues records, this pressing belongs in the conversation. "Nick Of Time" is an album that rewards close listening and repeated plays, and this heavyweight edition offers a fitting way to experience it. Slide it onto the turntable and let Bonnie Raitt do the rest.
