Play The Blues by Buddy Guy.
Few records capture the raw electricity of Chicago blues quite like "Play The Blues" by Buddy Guy. Pressed here on 180 gram audiophile vinyl, this collection puts Guy's fierce electric guitar front and center, spanning lead and rhythm work that snaps with the kind of intensity that made him a legend. This edition is a reissue of the original release, giving collectors a chance to revisit one of the great partnerships in the genre.
From the opening bars of "A Man Of Many Words," you get a sense of the caliber of talent assembled here. That track alone brings together Carl Radle on bass, Jim Gordon on drums, and none other than Dr. John on piano, laying down a foundation that lets Guy's guitar cut loose. It is a bold, swaggering way to begin, and it sets the tone for a session that never stops moving.
At the heart of the record is the chemistry between Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, whose harmonica and vocals thread through these sides with easy authority. Tracks like "Messin' With The Kid" and "My Baby Left Me (She Left Me A Mule To Ride)" thrive on that call and response energy, while "Come On In This House - Have Mercy Baby" and the shuffling "T - Bone Shuffle" show the band stretching out. A.C. Reed adds tenor saxophone muscle, and Michael Utley colors the arrangements with organ and piano, rounding out a sound that feels both loose and locked in.
The production pedigree here is remarkable. Ahmet Ertegun, Eric Clapton, and Tom Dowd share producer credits, with Ron Albert handling the recording, and Clapton himself steps in on rhythm guitar and bottleneck slide guitar. That extra layer of guitar work deepens the texture without ever crowding Guy, a testament to the taste and restraint on display throughout.
Two cuts, "This Old Fool" and "Honeydripper," come from a different session and bring a fresh cast into the mix. Here J. Geils lends rhythm guitar, Magic Dick blows harmonica, and Seth Justman sits at the piano, with Daniel Klein on bass and Stephen Bladd on drums. Produced by Michael Cuscuna and recorded by Richard Oulleppe, these tracks add welcome variety, their tighter, punchier feel offering a nice contrast to the rest of the program.
Rounding out the set are the slow burn of "A Poor Man's Plea," the wry "I Don't Know," and the rolling "Bad Bad Whiskey," each one a reminder of how deep this well runs. With Juke Joint Jimmy even lending foot tapping accompaniment, "Play The Blues" is a warm, spirited document of Buddy Guy in commanding form, essential listening for any serious blues collection.
