Psychicemotus by Yusef Lateef.
Few artists in jazz roamed as freely across sound and tradition as Yusef Lateef, and "Psychicemotus" captures him in one of his most exploratory moods. Recorded across two July days in 1965, the album weaves together original compositions and reinterpreted standards, folding blues, classical touches, and the reedman's signature flute work into a cohesive and adventurous whole.
Side A opens with the title track, "Psychicemotus," setting the tone for a record that lives up to its inventive name. It flows into "Bamboo Flute Blues," where Lateef's affinity for unusual textures and instruments comes to the fore, before "Semiocto" continues the run of Alnur Music originals. The side closes with a reading of "Why Do I Love You?," the Jerome Kern standard published by T. B. Harms Co., a reminder that Lateef could turn familiar material into something entirely his own.
Side B is no less wide ranging. It begins with "First Gymnopedie," a nod to the classical world reworked in a jazz setting, followed by the original "Medula Sonata." From there Lateef leans into the songbook with "I'll Always Be In Love With You" and a closing take on the Fats Waller staple "Ain't Misbehavin'," bringing the set home on a note that swings with warmth and wit.
The sessions themselves were spread across July 21 and 22, 1965, with tracks A1, A4, B1, B2, and B4 laid down on the first day, and A2, A3, and B3 captured on the second. That two day span gave the album its balance of freewheeling originals and carefully chosen standards, a program that shows both sides of Lateef's musical mind.
This edition, issued in 2023 under UMG Recordings, arrives in a handsome gatefold sleeve. The LP was mastered by Kevin Reeves at East Iris Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, and pressed and printed in the U.S.A. The runouts are etched, a detail collectors will appreciate as they cue up each side.
Carrying catalog number A-92 on the rear of the cover, with B0037579-01 noted on the spine, this pressing makes a fine addition to any shelf devoted to the more searching corners of the jazz tradition. For listeners drawn to Lateef's boundary crossing spirit, "Psychicemotus" remains an essential and rewarding document of a restless, endlessly curious musician at work.
