Recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, this is one of trumpeter Kenny Dorham's most cherished statements — an album whose title captures its very essence. Dorham was never the loudest voice of his era, and that's precisely the point: here his warm, understated lyricism takes center stage, revealing a musician who prized nuance over showmanship. Van Gelder's sessions defined the sound of modern jazz, and this recording sits comfortably among the intimate small-group masterworks he helped shape.
The playing is graceful and conversational throughout. Dorham's trumpet leads with a burnished, songlike tone, supported by an impeccable rhythm section: Tommy Flanagan's elegant, harmonically rich piano, Paul Chambers' deep and resonant bass, and Art Taylor's crisp, attentive drumming. This Analogue Productions reissue is a serious collector's object. Pressed on 180g vinyl, mastered and lacquer-cut by Kevin Gray from 100% analog masters, it arrives in a deluxe high-gloss tip-on jacket with an archival rice paper inner sleeve. Notably, this release carries a back-cover catalog misprint reading "8236" (the correct number is 8225) — a quirk that distinguishes it from earlier 2017 and 2022 pressings and adds real intrigue for the discerning buyer.

Comes in a deluxe high-gloss tip-on album jacket with a "Quality Record Pressings" archival quality rice paper inner sleeve. Includes a double-sided insert for "Prestige" Stereo and Mono sets of 25 and an "Acoustic Sounds" 4-pg catalog. The protective poly bag has 2 stickers on the front - "100% analog masters" and "The Analogue Productions Guarantee", and a barcode sticker on the back that also has the Analogue Productions catalog (product) number.
Repress of 2017 [r=9704499] and 2022 [r=22206817] but this release has the following differences:
- Back cover incorrectly has the catalog number as "8236".
- different copyright text at the bottom of the back cover.
