Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet by The Miles Davis Quintet.

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and supervised by Bob Weinstock for Prestige, this album captures the first great Miles Davis Quintet at the height of its early powers. It belongs to the celebrated run of sessions the group cut before Miles departed for Columbia, and its relaxed, almost conversational spirit gives the record its name and its enduring charm. This 2022 Analogue Productions pressing returns to the original analogue mono masters, cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.

The playing rewards close attention. Miles' trumpet is spare and lyrical, leaving space that John Coltrane fills with a harder, searching tenor voice—two temperaments in fascinating dialogue. Behind them, Red Garland's crisp, blocked piano chords, Paul Chambers' deep and supple bass, and the propulsive swing of "Philly" Joe Jones on drums form one of the most cohesive rhythm sections jazz has known. Together they move with the easy confidence the title promises.

Heard on 180g vinyl, the mono presentation is intimate and immediate, placing you in the room with the quintet. Ira Gitler's liner notes and Esmond Edwards' design are housed in a deluxe high-gloss tip-on jacket that does justice to the music inside. For collectors, it's a faithful, beautifully mastered edition of an essential mid-'50s Prestige date—a cornerstone of any serious jazz shelf.
