Sarah Vaughan by Sarah Vaughan.
There are records that announce a talent, and then there are records that crown one. This self titled EmArcy release, captured in a single session on December 18th, 1954, belongs firmly in the latter category. Sarah Vaughan was already a known quantity by this point, but here she steps fully into her power, delivering nine performances that move between playful swing and aching tenderness with a control that few singers before or since have matched.
The set opens with "Lullaby Of Birdland," a natural showcase for a voice that could bend and float at will, before easing into the wistful romance of "April In Paris." From there the A side offers the buoyant "He's My Guy" and the intimate "Jim," each a small study in phrasing and mood. Vaughan never rushes; she lets each line breathe, finding the emotional center of a lyric and holding it just long enough to make you lean in.
Flip to the B side and the emotional range only deepens. "You're Not The Kind" and a gorgeous reading of "Embraceable You" sit beside the tender "I'm Glad There Is You," a song that has become inseparable from her name. "September Song" carries its autumnal ache with a maturity that belies her years, and the closing "It's Crazy" sends the record off with a knowing wink. Taken together, it is a program that rewards a full front to back listen, an early argument for the album as an artistic statement rather than a loose collection of singles.
Originally issued in 1955, this pressing is a Verve Records release brought back by Universal Music Enterprises, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc., under a 2020 copyright. It has been manufactured and distributed with the care collectors have come to expect from the label's catalog reissues, keeping one of the great vocal jazz statements of the fifties in circulation for a new generation of listeners.
Details will please the discerning buyer. The runouts are etched with the coveted "STERLING" stamp, a mark that speaks to the mastering pedigree behind the disc. The package also includes an insert highlighting other titles in the series, and a hype sticker sits on the shrink wrap, both small touches that round out the presentation.
For anyone building a serious vocal jazz shelf, this is foundational listening. It captures Sarah Vaughan at a defining moment, her instrument supple and assured, her interpretive instincts fully formed. Slip it out, drop the needle on "Lullaby Of Birdland," and let one of the finest voices in American music do the rest.
