Serenade To A Soul Sister by The Horace Silver Quintet.
There are few sounds in jazz as instantly recognizable as the Horace Silver Quintet in full flight, and "Serenade To A Soul Sister" captures that group at a fascinating late-sixties moment. Originally released on Blue Note Records in 1968, this is a set that finds the pianist and composer moving with the times while staying rooted in the hard-swinging, soul-drenched vocabulary he did so much to define. From the opening bars of "Psychedelic Sally," the album announces itself as a record with one foot in the tradition and one eye on the changing musical landscape around it.
The music was documented at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, across two sessions in early 1968. The first three tracks, "Psychedelic Sally," the title cut "Serenade To A Soul Sister," and "Rain Dance," were laid down on February 23, while the flip side, comprising "Jungle Juice," "Kindred Spirits," and the closing ballad "Next Time I Fall In Love," was captured on March 29. Van Gelder's presence behind the console is a signature in itself, part of what gives Blue Note dates of this era their unmistakable warmth and clarity.
This edition arrives as part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl series, with all-analog LP mastering handled by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. Gray's work has become a benchmark for reissues that respect the character of the original tapes, and here it serves Silver's rhythmically charged writing beautifully, letting the interplay of the quintet breathe with the punch and depth the material demands.
The physical package honors the release as a proper collector's object. It comes housed in a single open pocket gatefold sleeve with a plain white, poly-lined inner sleeve protecting the record. The shrink-wrap carries a Blue Note Classic Vinyl series hype sticker on its front, and you may find a "Made in Germany" sticker on the back. The gatefold interior notes that permission for the lyrics was granted by Ecaroh Music, Inc., a nod to Silver's own publishing home.
The pressing bears the marks of its lineage throughout. A product of Liberty Records, it identifies itself as a Blue Note Records release, with the labels reading "Blue Note Records, A division of Liberty Records, Inc." Blue Note is a registered trademark of Capitol Records, LLC, and this edition carries a 2025 copyright from Capitol Records, LLC, and was made in the EU.
For collectors and listeners alike, this is a chance to own one of Horace Silver's most spirited late-Blue Note statements, presented with the care and fidelity the music has always deserved.
