Singin' The Blues by Otis Blackwell.

Few names in postwar American music carry the quiet influence of Otis Blackwell, the songwriter whose pen shaped rock and roll's earliest hits, and this Flyright collection turns the spotlight back onto his own performances. Gathering material recorded in 1953-54 and issued in 1981, it captures Blackwell before wider fame, at a moment when his voice and phrasing were still finding their footing in the blues idiom. It's a genuine piece of archival recovery, offered here with a sleeve designed by Nigel Goodall and framed as a document rather than a hit parade.

Musically, these are early sides steeped in the blues, and they reward close listening for the way Blackwell's delivery hints at the melodic instincts that would later define his songwriting. The recordings have the intimacy and grain of their era, presenting an artist whose gift for a memorable line comes through even in these formative performances. There's a directness here that a polished later-career retrospective could never replicate.

For the collector, this is a rewarding find on several counts. It carries the catalog number FLY 575 on the front cover and spine, FLY LP 575 on the labels, with the hand-etched runouts that mark it as an authentic period pressing. Copyright to Calvacade Music and a 1981 Flyright issue confirm its provenance. A meaningful addition to any serious blues shelf.
