Fenton Robinson's "Somebody Loan Me A Dime" stands as one of the quiet giants of the modern blues catalog, a record that rewards close listening as much as it satisfies on first play. Robinson brings a rare combination of gifts to the table here, singing with a warm, conversational ease while his guitar work moves with the fluid, jazz informed phrasing that earned him admirers well beyond the blues world. Across eleven tracks, he balances the raw and the refined, letting his musicianship breathe without ever losing the emotional pull at the heart of the songs.

From there the first side gathers momentum through "The Getaway" and a spirited reading of "Directly From My Heart To You," before settling into the loose swing of "Going To Chicago." The playing throughout is anchored by a superb Chicago cast. Cornelius Boyson lays down the bass alongside Tony Gooden on drums, with Bill Held's keyboards filling out the harmonic foundation. Mighty Joe Young lends his rhythm guitar to the proceedings, giving Robinson room to stretch out. A tight horn section brings extra color and lift, featuring David Baldwin on tenor saxophone, who also arranged the horns, Bill McFarland on trombone, and the twin trumpets of Elmer Brown and Norval Don Hodges.
Behind the boards, the album pairs Fenton Robinson himself with Bruce Iglauer as co producers, with Stu Black handling the engineering. Jim O'Neal contributes the liner notes, and the package is dressed with cover design by Ross & Harvey Inc., cover photography by Dan Coha, and liner photography by Jan Loveland. Theo Krieger cut the lacquer, giving the music its physical form on wax.
This pressing is closely related to another edition of the album, distinguished here by a different matrix number and issued without the booklet. The runouts are etched, with the exception of the MPO logo and codes, which are stamped. A cornerstone release for any serious blues collection.
